BUILDING CONNECTIONS

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS TO ADDRESS INTERPERSONAL VIOLENCE & CHILD MALTREATMENT

Through the Building Connections initiative, Mothercraft replicated and evaluated its interpersonal violence group intervention Connections: Group Intervention For Mothers and Children Experiencing Violence in Relationships – across Canada. The research project, funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada, was delivered from 2015-2020.

CONNECTIONS

A GROUP INTERVENTION FOR MOTHERS & CHILDREN EXPERIENCING VIOLENCE

The Connections group helps mothers think about family violence and its impacts on their use of alcohol and other substances, parenting, and children’s development. The Connections intervention manual provides step-by-step group implementation guidance, key messages, facilitator information sheets, and other resources to help facilitate each of the six weeks of the group.

The Connections intervention manual is available in English, French, and in a version for use in Aboriginal communities.

What were the Building Connections activities?
o Building awareness, capacity and confidence among service providers in PHAC’s Community based projects
o Developing resources and delivering certified training
o Offering a community of practice to certified Connections facilitators
o Supporting 34 communities across Canada to deliver the Connection interpersonal violence intervention
o Delivering the Connections intervention to almost 400 pregnant women and mothers
o Evaluating and sharing findings

CONNECTIONS FOR BREAKING THE CYCLE (C-BTC) OF VIOLENCE (2022-2026)
This four-year implementation research project funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada (Preventing and Addressing Family Violence – the Health Perspective) will build on the findings of Building Connections. Building Connections confirmed the replicability of the Connections interpersonal violence group intervention in community-based projects, and positive outcomes for mothers and children.

In C-BTC Mothercraft continues its partnership with 15 community partners across Canada to build capacity and increase the evidence base for Connections by, a) understanding whether impacts endure over time, and b) identifying the mechanisms responsible for the changes observed so that the intervention can be adapted if necessary and directed to appropriate groups to maximize outcomes. See below for additional information about C-BTC:

GOAL: To promote the national implementation of, and enhance the evidence base for, an interpersonal violence intervention that prevents and addresses family violence and child maltreatment in community-based settings.

Objective 1: To promote access to an evidence-based interpersonal violence group intervention for pregnant women and mothers of children (birth-6 years) attending CAPC/CPNP/AHSUNC projects.

Objective 2: To strengthen and expand a national network of certified facilitators responding to interpersonal violence in CAPC/CPNP/AHSUNC.
Objective 3: To conduct intervention research to: a) evaluate the impact of the Connections group intervention on pregnant women, mothers and certified facilitators; b) build an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of change – when, how and why changes occur; and c) analyze moderating factors that will identify for whom the Connections intervention is most effective.

Objective 4: To translate and disseminate the knowledge developed from this initiative broadly and to a wide range of audiences including participants, CAPC/CPNP/AHSUNC service providers, allied community service providers, researchers and policy makers.
