EDI in Toronto

Since the 1999-2000 school year, with the support of various funders, Toronto's kindergarten children have participated in the EDI initiative almost every school year. In the first three years the EDI was primarily implemented in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) schools in the former North York and Toronto municipalities, other TDSB schools, select Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) schools, as well as select private organizations offering kindergarten programming.

Cycle 1

In 2004, the provincial government announced funding for all Ontario school boards to implement the EDI across Senior Kindergarten classrooms for the purpose of establishing a baseline of Ontario children's readiness to learn at school. The 2004-2005 school year marked the first time that Conseil Scolaire de District du Centre Sud-Ouest (CSDCSO) participated and that all schools in TCDSB and TDSB participated. The fourth district school board in Toronto, Conseil Scolaire de District Catholique du Centre-Sud (CSDCCS), participated for the first time in 2005-2006. The results from children across these four school boards form the basis of Toronto’s 2004-2005 EDI cohort. Cycle 2

In 2007, Toronto once again received funding to participate in Cycle 2 of EDI implementation across Ontario communities. Following the work done in Cycle 1 (2004-2005 and 2005-2006), the implementation was targeted at Senior Kindergarten (SK) students. In the city of Toronto over 20,000 children attending SK across all four district school boards (TDSB, TCDSB, CSDCSO, and CSDCCS) participated in the project. Cycle 3

In 2010, Toronto once again received funding to participate in Cycle 3 of EDI implementation for the four district school boards (TDSB, TCDSB, CSDCSO, and CSDCCS). Over 20,000 children attending SK participated in the project. Click here to view 2010-2011 results.
